All of us have been deeply affected by the terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka. I have been in regular contact with Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo. We off er the Church and the people in Sri Lanka our prayerful support. Sunday Masses in Sri Lanka were cancelled again last weekend, because of the continued threat perception.
In the present context, it is necessary to strengthen security measures at all Churches in the Archdiocese, so that our people can pray peacefully, and our scheduled Masses and prayer services can continue undisturbed. I have had a meeting with the Police Commissioner, and a follow-up Meeting with our Deans, after which we have been in touch with the Police authorities to discuss steps that need to be taken. We hope to put in place some measures immediately. This could cause some inconvenience, and I plead for understanding from our people. I also request our faithful not to carry big bags to church, so as to facilitate a quick entry. It would be advisable to come a little early for Mass and other services, just in case there is a delay because of checks at the entry point.
In the meantime, I urge our people to double their prayers for protection from all those who would wish to create disturbance, and for the Lord’s healing touch for them.
