FCCO Celebrates Three Decades of Community Empowerment in the Archdiocese of Bombay

The Federation of Centres for Community Organization (FCCO) commemorated its 30th anniversary on January 11, 2025, with a grand celebration at St. Pius X College, Goregaon. Established in 1994 by Bishop Allwyn D’Silva and Sr. Seema, the FCCO has grown into a vital network of community centres across Mumbai, dedicated to social transformation.

The event, aptly named “People’s Power,” opened with a prayer led by Fr. Jervis D’Souza, Secretary of the Social Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Bombay. Fr. D’Souza reflected on the FCCO’s mission, quoting Scripture: “He sent me to set the captives free.” His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias, the chief guest, joined dignitaries in a symbolic tree-watering ceremony, signifying growth and resilience.

A video documentary, produced by the Catholic Communication Centre, Mumbai, was screened, offering an inspiring narrative of FCCO’s milestones. It showcased the organization’s evolution from its humble beginnings to becoming a beacon of hope for marginalized communities.

The program also included a creative play directed by Dr. Omkar Bhatkar, a sociologist and art director. The satirical yet thought-provoking performance explored innovative strategies used by communities to fight for their rights, resonating deeply with the theme of empowerment.

Key contributors to the FCCO’s journey were honoured during the event. Sr. Seema, one of the pioneers in the conceptualization and growth of community Centres, received a special felicitation from Cardinal Gracias, while Bishop Allwyn D’Silva was awarded a certificate of honour for his visionary leadership. At the event, many grassroots workers who have contributed to the vision and growth of Community Centres and the FCCO were recognized and awarded certificates of appreciation.

Dr. Vibhuti Patel, the keynote speaker and former head of the Economics Department at SNDT College, emphasized the urgency of "People’s Power" in dismantling caste and social divisions. She praised the FCCO for being a steadfast advocate for community development over three decades.

The celebration also marked the launch of the Centre for Peace Trust’s official website and social media presence, furthering its outreach and engagement.

The event concluded with a musical tribute by Ms. Anita Gomes and her team, who performed an original composition in the East Indian style, celebrating the FCCO’s legacy. The vote of thanks by Sr. Christel and the collective singing of “Hum Honge Kaamyaab” (We Shall Overcome) brought the evening to a close, reaffirming the FCCO’s unwavering commitment to empowering communities.
