Archbishop John Rodrigues Assumes Leadership with Gratitude to God and Appreciation for Cardinal Oswald Gracias' Contribution

Mumbai, January 25, 2025 – Archbishop John Rodrigues formally assumed office today as the Archbishop of Bombay, following the acceptance of the resignation of Oswald Cardinal Gracias. Appointed as Coadjutor Bishop of Bombay on November 30, 2024, Archbishop Rodrigues now succeeds Cardinal Gracias, whose extraordinary contributions to the Archdiocese, the Church in India, and the Universal Church have left a lasting and profound legacy.


Born on August 21, 1967, in Bandra, Mumbai, Archbishop Rodrigues has dedicated his life to the service of the Church. Ordained on April 18, 1998, he pursued advanced theological studies at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, earning a licentiate in systematic theology. Over the years, he has held several key roles, including serving as Rector of St. Pius X College, Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay, and Bishop of Poona.


Reflecting on Cardinal Gracias' legacy, Archbishop Rodrigues remarked:

“Cardinal Oswald Gracias was a giant of a man, and now as his successor, I have mighty big shoes to fill.”


In a message of gratitude, Archbishop Rodrigues shared:

“I am grateful for the kind wishes received and the assurance of prayers on my appointment as Archbishop.
