Kovind Roots for Girl's Education

Sept. 20, 2017

The Congregation of Jesus & Mary, who celebrate the bicentenary of their foundation this year, were one of the first women religious orders who came to work in India - exactly 175 years ago! The Congregation of Jesus & Mary, or the RJM as they are also known, have been at the forefront of education, women empowerment and women and child welfare. The Archdiocese of Bombay is blessed by the strength of their presence, as their students and beneficiaries of their outreach will testify.

Already present in Agra, they were invited to Bombay (now Mumbai) by Bp. Hartmann and we owe their presence to the four women pioneers of their Congregation who travelled by bullock cart for over 40 days to reach here on December 3, 1850!

While attending the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Jesus & Mary College, Delhi, on September 20, 2017, President Ram Nath Kovind had this to say, "Missionary institutions such as this one have become symbols of scholarship, dedicated teaching and academic excellence." He also added that the Christian community, whose history in India goes back 2000 years, has contributed so much to our shared culture and has carved a special role for itself in education.

We wish the Congregation of Jesus & Mary our heartfelt thanks for their contribution over two centuries and many blessings on achieving these milestones. Ad multos annos!
