Holy tabernacle stolen from church

Unidentified men stole the tabernacle of St John the Baptist Church at Benaulim in Goa, police sources said. The incident, which happened on the night of Aug 5, came to light Tuesday when the church was opened for the morning service. The donation box was also found lying outside the church premises, but it could not be ascertained if any cash was stolen.
What has puzzled the police is that the doors of the church were found bolted from inside when the theft is believed to have taken place. The police were trying to determine how the thieves managed to gain access to the church. A sniffer dog squad and fingerprint experts were pressed into service but no valid clues could be found, police sources said.
Benaulim MLA Caitano Silva, Nuvem MLA Francisco 'Mickky' Pacheco, Benaulim sarpanch Royala Fernandes visited the church and took stock of the situation. The Colva police have booked an offence against unidentified accused and further investigations are under way.
