Pope Francis Invited to Saint Pius X Celebrations
March 20, 2014
An invitation has been extended to Pope Francis by organizers of the upcoming celebrations for centenary of the death of Pope Saint Pius X in August.
The festivities, which will take place in Venice, include an art exhibition in his honor as well as a concert of sacred music.
The Holy Father has been invited to preside over the Closing Ceremony of the event, although no word has been given as to whether he has accepted.
Pope Saint Pius X reigned as Supreme Pontiff from 1903 to his death on August 20th, 1914. The saintly Pontiff, who published the first Code of Canon Law, was known for his pastoral approach. When a massive earthquake struck southern Italy, Pope Pius X sheltered countless refugees in the Apostolic Palace.
Among the art pieces that will be displayed at the centennial celebrations is the official portrait of Pope Saint Pius X, painted by famed Italian artist Alessandro Milesi, shortly after the Pontiff’s election.
