KUALA LUMPUR: A thanksgiving Mass, to celebrate the elevation of His Eminence Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez, Malaysia’s first Cardinal will be held on January 8, 2017 at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist.

Our very own Cardinal Fernandez was among the 17 prelates who received their red hats from Pope Francis on Nov 19, 2016.

There were 13 who are cardinalelectors. Cardinal Fernandez is part of the other 4 cardinals who will not be able to elect the next pope.

However, the honour bestowed on Cardinal Fernandez shows Pope Francis’ appreciation for both, our nation and the person which truly is a source of encouragement. His appointment, too, is very significant and historical to our beloved country Malaysia.

“These choices by the Holy Father reflect the mind and heart of the Holy Father, his caring concern for the countries, and his desire to show his appreciation and encourage and strengthen the Churches and the Nations,” as commented by Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Mumbai and president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC).

The celebrations will begin with vespers and the Rosary at 3.00pm, followed by Mass at 4.00pm and fellowship. All are invited to join in thanksgiving.

In anticipation of a large crowd and limited parking in areas surrounding the Cathedral, we encourage the faithful to use public transportation, as the Cathedral is accessible from the Masjid Jamek LRT station, as well as the Bukit Nanas Monorail station.

For those who wish to drive, parking is available at Menara Olympia at RM7 per entry (800 lots), Bursa Malaysia at RM5 per entry (300 lots) and the open carpark in Jalan Raja Chulan at RM5 per entry (200 lots).

As Jalan Bukit Nanas will be closed for the celebration, the drop off point will be at the Telekom Museum.
