Every year, from January 18th to 25th, Christians all over the world observe a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. A theme is chosen jointly by the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches. The theme for this year is: RECONCILIATION - THE LOVE OF CHRIST COMPELS US, words taken from the Second Letter of St Paul to the Corinthians, chapter 5, vs. 14-20.

This year's celebration of Christian Unity has special signifi cance because it marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral in Germany – an event which sparked off the very painful division in the Christian world between the Catholic Church and the Reformed Churches. On October 31, 2016, Pope Francis and the President of the World Lutheran Federation embraced each other and signed a Joint Statement ending 500 years of separation and animosity.

The main Prayer Service this year will be held at Salvation Church, Dadar, on January 20, 7:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The service is being organised by a Joint Committee of Catholics and representatives of the New Life Fellowships. So far, most of our Ecumenical Services have been held jointly by Catholics and the Main Line Reformation Churches. This is the first time that we are having a Prayer Service in Mumbai organised by the Catholic Church and the 'Pentecostal Churches'.

I would urge as many Catholics as possible to attend this Prayer Service at Salvation Church. Let us pray together that the prayer of Jesus that "all may be one" (John 17:20) will be answered.
