Parenting Seminar at St.Francis De Sales Church

Aug. 23, 2013

St Francis De Sales Church, Koparkhairane, celebrated Parents’ Day on Sunday, July 28, 2013. Parents’ Day began with a concelebrated Mass by Fr Prabhakar msfs. Preaching on the occasion, Fr Prabhakar stressed on the importance of parents in everyone’s life, giving examples of ideal parents from the Bible. An entertainment programme was put up by the Sunday School children for their parents immediately after the Mass. While parents remained for the interactive session on Parenting organised by the parish unit of the Bombay Catholic Sabha, the children were entertained by the youth. Mr Oliver Andrade and Mrs Annie Andrade were the speakers for the workshop. Parents attended in large numbers, and have benefitted from the session which included group discussion and feedback from parents.

Some of the salient points discussed were: Parents have received graces from God in the Sacrament of Marriage. Marriage is a vocation which comes with commitment and the responsibility of evangelising children. Parents are co-creators with God, and children are a gift from God and they belong to God. Parents are just stewards; they are primary educators and are accountable to God. ‘Pruning’ – disciplining should be gentle. Parents need to give children the Christian environment. Bringing up children is the joint responsibility of husband and wife. Giving regular quality time to children should be the norm. Training of children is a must, and should be done with a Christian perspective, else media will train the children.

There should be meaningful family prayer. God should be made the third partner. Family rituals are uniting factors, and simple rituals should be practised like family reunion, eating dinner together, etc. The group discussions taken up were liked by the parishioners. The session was lively and meaningful.
