His Excellency, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal from 2010 to 2016, celebrated a ‘farewell’ Eucharist with Oswald Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay at the Cathedral of the Holy Name on September 26, 2016. The other concelebrants were, Archbishop Felix Machado of Vasai, Bishop Alwyn Barreto of Sindhudurg,  Bishop Thomas Dabre of Pune, Bishop Lourdes Daniel of Nashik, Bishop Elias Gonsalves of Amravati, Bishop Thomas Elavanal, Eparchy of Kalyan (Syro Malabar), Bishops Dominic Savio Fernandes and John Rodrigues, Auxiliary Bishops of Bombay and Bishop Emeritus, Agnelo Gracias.

The priests, religious and parishioners of the Archdiocese are no strangers to His Excellency’s genial presence and he has always found a warm welcome here.  He recalled, with some nostalgia, his very first visit during which he presided over the installation and unveiling of the statue of St. John Paul II on the 25thanniversary of the late Pope’s visit to the Archdiocese of Bombay and the Diocese of Vasai.

Long an admirer of St. John Paul II, Archbishop Pennacchio expressed his pleasure and privilege at being appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Poland, the homeland of the saint.  Thanks to the beneficence of His Excellency, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount and the Diocesan Seminary received the relics of St. John Paul II on the Nuncio’s previous pastoral visit.  Today, His Excellency also gifted the Cathedral of the Holy Name a relic of the saint. On conclusion of the Eucharistic celebration, the congregation was blessed with the relic.

Over the tea and snacks which were provided after the Mass, all those who attended were given the opportunity to wish His Excellency a fond farewell and ad multos annos.
